What does the “CVG” in CVG Douglas fir flooring stand for?
So what do the letters “CVG” stand for when referencing CVG Douglas fir flooring or porch decking?
This is one of those little things that often gets confused by people when searching for CVG Douglas fir flooring, paneling, porch decking and trim & lumber. Most think it stands for Clear Vertical Grain Douglas fir. While this is close it’s not entirely accurate. The “C” in CVG stands quite simply for the grade of lumber. In this case the “C” stands for C&btr which is a grade outlined in the West Coast Lumber Inspection Bureaus (WCLIB) grade rule book for West Coast species.
So in the case of Vertical Grain Douglas fir the “C” in CVG can better be understood to read as “C&Btr Clear Vertical Grain Douglas fir“. This is in fact the highest clear grade available per the WCLIB grading rules. While you might have heard or seen others advertising grades such as “B&btr” or “A&btr” as they relate to Douglas fir flooring, these technically are not real grades. They’re just made up so to speak! The same grade applies to Clear Mix Grain Douglas fir as well. The more abbreviated version of CMG Douglas fir can be read as C&btr Clear Mix Grain Douglas fir.
We’ll upload more posts addressing grades (made up or not) and some of the things they do and don’t address that people often assume they do. So stay tuned and feel free to reach out to us if you have any questions relating to your Doug fir needs and we’ll do our best to help!
