What is the difference between Clear Vertical Grain Douglas fir or VG for short and Mix Grain Douglas fir or MG for short?

As you might assume it has to do with the grain pattern.  Clear Vertical Grain Douglas fir is just as it implies.  It has a vertical grain pattern that runs the length of the board creating that more or less “stripey” look that is so common with fir flooring found in homes.  Clear Vertical Grain Doug fir is most often found being used for flooring, porch decking, and even paneling such as bead board used in ceiling, wainscoting, and soffit applications.  

On the flip side to Clear Vertical Grain Douglas fir you have Mix Grain Doug fir.  Some would refer to this as “Flat Grain” Doug fir.  The grain on this will be more “wavy” and mottled looking.  It’s typically the same grain pattern you picture in 2×4 or 2×6 lumber found in a big box store or local lumber yard.  A Clear Mix Grain Doug fir grade is most typically used for flooring and paneling but is not recommended for use in porch decking applications.  

C&Btr clear grades are common for both Vertical Grain and Mix Grain Doug fir and are often displayed as CVG and CMG Douglas fir respectively.
