Eliminate the Squeak in your Floor with 3 Simple Tips

By: Edge One / Douglas Fir Flooring / 0 comment

Do you ever feel like your floor is providing your home with an unwanted soundtrack? From time to timedouglas fir flooring can develop a pesky squeaking habit, and the result is often frustrating. You don’t have to be stuck with the noise forever, though.

Altrufir has a few simple solutions that will get your beautiful flooring blissfully silent in no time.

Squeaking typically starts after your wood flooring has settled into your home. The planks tend to shrink, and as you walk across them, they rub together and release that telltale noise. It will also make noise if the boards have loosened over time. The first thing you need to do is pinpoint the source of the squeak. From here, you have a few solutions if you’re wondering how to fix a squeaky floor:

  1. Talcum Powder
If your flooring is squeaky because the boards are rubbing against one another, talcum powder provides a quick solution. Simply pour the substance over the seam between the two boards and run it in. This process will probably have to be repeated every six months, but it’s an easy way to get quick sound relief.
  2. Shims
If it’s possible to attend to your floors from below, you can nib the noises in the bud effectively and efficiently. Simply place a shim, which is a thin piece of filler material, between the subfloor and joist to occupy any empty space. This will prevent the empty space from triggering squeaks every time you step over it.
  3. Screws
Sometimes, the subfloor and hardwood flooring have grown apart. To fix this issue, install screws from below into the subfloor. Make sure to do a test run with a ⅛ drill bit to see how deep the subflooring goes! This will dictate the length of screws used.

Treat your home — and your sanity — to a solution to the squeaks with these quick and easy solutions. Once you know how to stop squeaky floors, you’ll be able to focus on your beautiful flooring from Altrufir, rather than any irksome noises.
